Should I replace carpet w/ hardwood or tile in large, open concept LR/DR/Kitchen of chalet w/ lots of windows.?

The room faces west and so I could take advantage of "pive solar" if I used tile (the sun would heat up the floors in the winter) but worry it will be too cold - it isn't really a Canadian thing to tile a whole house, I don't think....
